Trial delayed in CSC case

The trial of a 27-year-old suspect in two different criminal sexual conduct cases has been delayed indefinitely.

St. Joseph County Circuit Court officials said a Spanish-speaking translator was too ill to participate in last week’s opening of a trial in which Miguel Hernandez-Ruiz is a suspect.

Judge Paul Stutesman announced it will be rescheduled.

Court officials said Hernandez-Ruiz is facing two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree home invasion stemming from a March 2024 alleged incident in the Sweet Lake Trailer Park, east of Sturgis.

The second case allegedly occurred in February 2024, when Hernandez-Ruiz allegedly broke into the home of a Sturgis woman and sexually assaulted her.

Hernandez-Ruiz is a Mexican National who came to the United States in 2021 on a temporary work visa, which expired in December 2021.
