Luke Lori announces House candidacy

The son of a former state representative is the second person set to challenge incumbent Steve Carra for the 36th House District.

Luke Lori, 47, son of former sheriff and State Rep. Matt Lori, announced his intentions Tuesday to the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners.

Constantine resident Max Coon announced his candidacy late last year.

A Three Rivers resident, Lori spent two decades as a corrections officer at the St. Joseph County Jail and later a district court magistrate – a job from which he retired last month.

Carra, who is completing his third, two-year term in 2026, plans to formally announce next week his intention to seek re-election.

The primary election is Aug. 4.

County commissioner Ken Malone said he hopes the county’s Republican Party agrees to run just one person against the incumbent if they hope to unseat Carra, who Malone said “is somebody who will not work with either side in Lansing.”
