Mottville will not be decommissioned

The fate of Mottville Dam was clarified earlier this month during Mottville Township’s Feb. 12 board meeting.

According to the Three Rivers Commercial-News, the matter was discussed by Brian Bergsma, director of government affairs for Indiana Michigan Power.

He said the dam will not be decommissioned. To the contrary, Bergsma said Indiana Michigan Power plans to renew the dam’s operational license for continued service after its current license expires in 2033.

Constructed on the St. Joseph River 103 years ago, the Mottville Dam was previously relicensed in 2003, Bergsma said.
