A Cass County man who was one of more than two dozen known victims of a lottery scam will receive some level of justice after the perpetrators behind the fraud were recently sentenced.
A 37-year-old Florida woman will spend three years in prison for her role in a years-long scam that defrauded millions of dollars.
The Cass County man was taken for $150,000, authorities said.
The woman, Danielle Diarbakerly, was ordered to pay more than $3.4 million in restitution. She pleaded guilty in August to money laundering conspiracy.
Diarbakerly and her accomplices operated the scam from January 2020 to September 2024. Victims were told they won a multi-state lottery but had to send large amounts of money to cover taxes and fees before collecting what turned out to be fictitious winnings.
