Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared states of emergency in Cass, St. Joseph and Branch counties stemming from Friday’s tornado activity.
Whitmer Sunday morning surveyed portions of the three counties from overhead. Accompanied by Michigan State Police, Whitmer was provided a closer look at the destruction caused by what is now being identified as at least four tornadoes that caused extensive damage, especially in areas near Edwardsburg in Cass County, Three Rivers in St. Joseph County and Union City in Branch County.
Whitmer said state resources will be made available to assist in recovery efforts due to Friday’s tornadoes.
St. Joseph County Prosecutor Deb Davis said as a result of Whitmer’s action, the declaration automatically increases criminal penalties related to interference with first responders, firefighters, law-enforcement officials, emergency management personnel and volunteers.
Davis said in addition, strengthened penalties are now in place for anyone caught looting.
