Schoolcraft animal rescue ordered to close

An animal rescue and rehab owner is fighting to keep her business open after Schoolcraft Township officials ordered its closure.

WWMT Channel 3 has reported that owners of Forgotten Souls and Rescue Rehab received notice last week from Schoolcraft Township officials, alerting them that they have 15 days to confirm the rescue has been discontinued and removed from its property on Portage Road.

In the notice, zoning administrator Shellie Briggs stated that an animal rescue shelter is not permitted at the property.

Schoolcraft Township Supervisor Don Ulsh told WWMT that a neighbor called the township complaining about dogs roaming in the area.

Ulsh said the township was never aware the rescue was operating at that location to begin with. He said owners are in violation of township zoning ordinance.

Rescue owner Amanda Schepeler said she has been working with the township and zoning administration toward a peaceful resolution. She said she is seeking a special land-use permit so she can continue operating out of her home.
