Constantine village officials announced that the goal of a new fire station took one step closer to reality last week.
Demolition started Wednesday on the former D&S Market building, at 175 N. Washington St. The property is the location of the future Constantine Fire Department.
Municipal officials said the one-time business has more recently turned into an eyesore, with peeling paint and boarded-up doors.
The new fire station still faces a number of hurdles, including planning, construction and financing, but demolition of the D&S facility marks a step in the right direction, village officials said.
The village plans to issue up to $2.5 million in bonds to complement a $1.5 million grant to help cover the cost of the new building.
