Douglas “Doug” Lee Underwood, age 73, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2026, in Sturgis.
Born on April 22, 1953 in Toledo, Doug was the beloved son of Paul and Evelyn Underwood (Ellsworth).
Doug graduated from Bolivar Central High School in New York in 1972 and later pursued his passion for food service by completing a program at the Pennsylvania Rehab Center in 1978.
Throughout his life, Doug demonstrated humility, a quality that defined his character and left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Doug had a deep love for sports. As a young man, he enjoyed shooting hoops and later developed a fondness for bowling. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions, finding joy in cheering for his favorite teams. His enthusiasm for sports reflected his ability to find happiness in life’s simple pleasures. A man of faith, Doug accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at a young age. Despite facing mental health challenges throughout his adult life, he remained steadfast in his belief and unwavering in his humility. When asked about his faith, Doug always affirmed his salvation with clarity and conviction. His life was a testament to quiet strength and grace under adversity. Doug was known for his kindness and selflessness. He never imposed his desires on others and was always willing to lend a helping hand when asked. Those who knew him admired his gentle spirit and appreciated the way he lived as a witness to God’s plan for him—a life marked by acceptance and gratitude rather than complaint or blame.
Doug is survived by his sister Karen Whisler and her son Toby; his brother David Underwood and David’s children: Janet Corbin (David), Amy Crawford (Jon), and Shannon Underwood; as well as six grandchildren: Kyle, Rhylie Vaughan (Treavor), Nathan (Marlena), Joel Corbin, Diana Crawford, and Danial Crawford.
He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Evelyn Underwood; grandparents John and Mable Underwood; and Addison and Florence Rice.
Though Doug faced challenges during his earthly journey, those who loved him take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace with Jesus—free from pain, with a clear mind and healthy body—reunited with those who went before him. May Doug’s memory serve as an enduring reminder of humility, faith, and quiet strength to all who knew him.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa in Sturgis. Private burial will take place at Whitehouse Cemetery in White House, Ohio.
