Edwardsburg man died in exchange of gunfire with authorities

A 45-year-old Edwardsburg man died Wednesday after he was shot in an exchange of gunfire with law-enforcement personnel in Cass County’s Jefferson Township.

Sheriff Clint Roach said deputies responded midday to the 29000 block of Davis Lake Street. A caller to central dispatch reported a man at the residence was at the front door and armed with a handgun.

The caller identified the man as Carlos Tepach, her husband.

Authorities noted he appeared to have fled on foot in a northern direction and into nearby woods. The suspect was eventually located on railroad tracks near Harris Street, where gunfire was reported.

Troopers said an exchange of gunfire took place and caused the suspect to become incapacitated. After determining that the suspect was nonresponsive, officers approached the suspect and began to render first aid, but to no avail.
