Cass County continues search form permanent prosecutor

The search continues for a permanent Cass County prosecutor after former, long-time prosecutor, Victor Fitz, resigned last month.

According to WWMT, Fitz said toxicity from local leadership and a shortage of attorneys influenced his decision to step down and take a similar position in Branch County.

Sarah Scoggin has been serving as interim prosecutor since earlier this month.

County officials said their focus centers on supporting Scoggin and her team, while keeping the office running.

Meanwhile, Judge Mark Herman is still accepting applications for the permanent position. WWMT reports no timeline has been announced for interviews or a final decision.

In the meantime, Scoggin is working to recruit assistant prosecutors and bring in outside help to keep cases moving.
