Gary Lee McClain, age 81, of Centreville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2026. A man with a servant’s heart, Gary dedicated his life to his family, his faith, and the community he called home.
He was born on October 17, 1944 in Detroit to Frank and Edith (Fauble) McClain. Shortly after graduating from White Pigeon High School, he began a long and dedicated tenure at the Kirsch Company in 1967, where he worked until his retirement.
Gary’s commitment to others was most evident in his public service. He served as the Fire Chief of the Centreville Fire Department and as Village President and a longtime Council member. His faith was his anchor; he was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Centreville and, more recently, Creators Praise Ministries in Mendon.
Beyond his professional and civic life, Gary found joy in the simple things. Whether he was admiring tractors as a member of the St. Joe Valley Antique Tractor Association, relaxing at a campsite, or cheering on his beloved Detroit Lions, he was happiest when surrounded by the things—and people—he loved.
On March 11, 1967, Gary married the love of his life, Carole Smoll. Together, they built a legacy of family that remains his greatest achievement. He is survived by his wife, Carole; his children, Jim (Cindy) McClain, Kim Eazsol, Katie (Adam) Kawall, and Scott McClain; and his sister, Karen MacNeil. His memory will be cherished by his five granddaughters, his great-grandson, and two great-granddaughters, all of whom brought him immense pride.
Visitation services will be held at Eley Funeral Home, 235 W. Burr Oak St., Centreville, MI 49032 on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Interment will follow at the Prairie River Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Creators Praise Ministries, 163 W Main St, Mendon, MI 49072 or Special Olympics Area 18, 6670 Edgefield St., Portage, MI 49024.
