Rachel M. Merkel, age 97, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born July 31, 1928, in Alburtis, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Oscar E. and Elizabeth (Moll) Reifinger.
Rachel made her home in Sturgis since 2012, coming from Leo, Indiana. On December 24, 1948, she married the love of her life, Dr. Joseph R. Merkel, at Huff’s Union Church in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He preceded her in death on November 29, 2025. Together they shared nearly 77 years of marriage, building a life centered on love, faith, and devotion to family.
Rachel was a loving and dedicated wife and mother whose greatest joy came from caring for those she loved. She was a faithful member of Salem United Church of Christ in Fort Wayne, and will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering commitment to her family.
She is survived by her son, Glenn J. (Eva) Merkel of Key Largo, Florida; and several cherished nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Joseph.
In honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. Private burial of her cremated remains will take place at Sturgis Memorial Gardens.
The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
