Harriet B. Smith, age 89, of Sturgis, passed away peacefully at her home early Sunday morning, September 21, 2025.
She was born on August 28, 1936 in Sturgis, the daughter of the late Harry and Pearl (States) Caywood. Harriet was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and a proud member of the Sturgis High School Class of 1954. Following her graduation, she went on to pursue her passion for beauty and style, earning her degree from Wright Beauty College in Battle Creek in 1972.
On July 23, 1965, she married Martyn H. “Bear” Smith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. Their marriage was filled with love and laughter until his passing in 2010, after 45 years together.
Harriet touched the lives of many in her community through her work. She owned and operated Profile Hair Design in Sturgis from 1976 to 2004, a business that became more than a salon— it was a place of connection, friendship, and care. She was proud when her daughter carried on that tradition, keeping the salon alive and thriving. Before opening her own business, Harriet had worked at Ruth’s Bridal Shop in LaGrange.
A proud member and Golden Eagle of Eagles Lodge #1314, Harriet cherished the friendships she made there. She enjoyed golfing, baking, sewing, and had a special love for animals, especially her cats. She also delighted in playing games on her computer. Outgoing, warm, and social, Harriet was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Denise Bowen and Dawn (John) Watson, both of Sturgis; her son, David Lindsay of Sturgis; daughter-in-law, Wendy Lindsay of Bronson; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; her loving partner, Phillip Long of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Daniel Lindsay; daughter-in-law, Karen Lindsay; grandsons, Justin Bowen, Casey Bowen, and Joseph Lindsay; great-granddaughter, Madelyn Bowen; brothers, Ned Caywood and Jack Caywood; and sisters, Margo Wygant and Virginia Gray.
In honoring Harriet’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, September 29, at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. A celebration of her life, with food and fellowship, will immediately follow at Eagles Lodge #1314, 1207 W. Chicago Rd., Sturgis.
Memorial donations would be appreciated to Hope for the Animals of St. Joseph County, 25420 Mintdale Road, Sturgis, MI 49091.
