Household hazardous waste collection considered a success

Organizers of last week’s electronics recycling and household hazardous waste collection in Centreville said a considerable amount of traffic patronized the event, despite the fact it was held on a weekday and weather was not ideal.

St. Joseph County Conservation District Director Carolyn Grace said fall collection numbers are typically less than the spring event, and this year’s spring-versus-fall volume remained consistent with that pattern.

Tuesday’s collection at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds netted:

9,500 pounds of liquid hazardous waste from pesticides and herbicides.
Nine crates of electronics, composed of six from televisions, three from all other corded items and one large container of cords.
5,500 pounds of paint, which can be recycled and made into 175 gallons of usable paint.
There were 651 vehicles that entered the collection and 12 trailers full of tires, compared to 871 cars and 52 trailers from the May event, Grace said.

Organizers called the event a success and planning will begin soon for the 2026 collections.
