Richard Lee Schlimgen, age 85, of Three Rivers, went to be with his Lord on Monday, October 13, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born April 20, 1940 in Mitchell, S.D., the son of Fred L. and Grace N. (Price) Schlimgen.
Richard graduated from Huron High School, then earned his bachelor’s degree at Huron College and Masters degree at the University of South Dakota.
He began work as a guidance counselor at Estherville Junior College, then moved to Michigan to do similar work at Glen Oaks Community College for 31 years.
While at Glen Oaks, Richard met Marilyn (Goode) Mercer, and the two fell in love and married Dec. 22, 1978. They shared 43 years of marriage before her passing on May 9, 2022.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Three Rivers/Centreville.
Remaining to cherish his memory are two step-sons, Bradley Mercer and Anthony “Tony” (Michielle Sweet) Mercer; adopted daughter, Sabra; three beloved grandchildren, Tony Mercer, Madeline (Jeff) Gilbert, and Paige (Cody Martin) Sweet; one beloved great-grandson; one brother-in-law, Tom (Peggy) Goode; three sisters-in-law, Lois (Sumer) Bileydi, Jean Freimund, and Virginia Sharp; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
His family will receive friends Friday, October 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Three Rivers/Centreville, 320 N. Main St., Three Rivers. A funeral service will follow at noon at the church with Rev. Brenda Deily officiating. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.
Donations in Richard’s memory may be directed to First Presbyterian Church of Three Rivers/Centreville or to A.A. Envelopes will be available at Hohner Funeral Home.

I am saddened to learn of Richard’s passing and my condolences go out to his family. He processed my application to attend Glen Oaks Community College in 1975, and because of his efforts I was granted an academic scholarship to attend. He was a good man, and I will always be grateful for his help.
