Offender Success Program seeking gift card donations

Organizers behind an event overseen by St. Joseph County Probation/Parole Office are seeking assistance in the form of gift cards as a reward.

The office is hosting an art contest for probationers and parolees as part of its “Offender Success Program.”

The event is described as a pro-social activity to help support, encourage and mentor offenders in a positive manner. All artwork submitted will be approved by the offender’s agent, must be appropriate in nature for all audiences and will be displayed in the agency’s courthouse office.

Dacia Kirkland, St. Joseph County Probation secretary, said the contest will continue through the end of the year, with monthly winners in October, November and December.

With high interest and participation, there is a chance it could continue into the new year, Kirkland said.

She noted gas cards are an ideal gift, as they help offenders get to work, attend treatment and report to their probation agents. Meijer and Walmart cards, meanwhile, help offenders get food, clothing and personal-hygiene items.

Kirkland can be reached at 467-5643.
