Charges pending in Marcellus animal cruelty case

Cass County Sheriff’s Department deputies are continuing their investigation into a case of animal cruelty in Marcellus Township.

Sheriff Clint Roach said animal control was dispatched Sept. 30 to the 10000 block of Pioneer Street following a report of two dogs found as strays. Investigators said the animals were emaciated and dehydrated, and one of the dogs appeared to be blind.

Roach said the animals were seen at Bergmans Veterinary Medical Center and were found to have no parasites or other factors that would cause their condition, other than lack of care.

Since receiving care from veterinary staff, the dogs have gained weight and are now healthy enough to receive vaccines, though the blind dog will need surgery to have her eyes removed, Roach said.

Owner of the dogs was identified and charges are pending by the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
