Jerry Lynn Culp of Portage, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at the age of 82. Born to Edgar and Margaret Culp on October 30, 1943, he grew up on Donnell Lake in Vandalia.
Jerry was inspired by a teacher in elementary school to become a teacher. After graduating from Cassopolis High School in 1962, he attended Western Michigan University. He earned his teaching degree in 1966. Jerry was hired by Portage Public Schools where he taught for 33 years until his retirement in 1999.
Jerry thought two teachers could have a wonderful life together and married Karen Schreiner, a Cassopolis and WMU classmate, in 1966. She graduated from college with a teaching degree in 1968 and joined him as a Portage Schools career educator.
He enjoyed lake life, sports, family events and helping others. Jerry’s students, family members, and friends were the center of his life. Through the years many commented on his thoughtfulness and caring along with a fun-loving personality.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Karen; two sisters: JoAnne Purlee, of Burr Oak; and Patti Anderson (Bert), of Sturgis; and brother-in-law Greg Schreiner (Rebecca), of the state of Texas; and son-in-law: Kevin McGowan, of Portage; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter: Deborah McGowan; parents: Edgar Culp and Margaret Culp Schmidtendorff; brother-in-law: Kenny Purlee and father and mother-in-law: Roy and Marilynn Schreiner.
In accordance with Jerry’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be a small private service at a later date.
