Susan Eaton, 84

Susan Lou Eaton, age 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Esther’s House Center for Hospice Care in her beloved hometown of Elkhart. She was born on March 21, 1941, and was a longtime resident of Marcellus. She was the oldest of nine children in the Chaffee family.

Susan’s memories live on through her five children: Randy Smith, Danny Smith, Pamela (Tom) Chupp, Lanny Smith, and Timothy (Lisa) Smith. Each of her children carries with them the wisdom and knowledge that she imparted as a hard-working single mother. She also had many great-grandchildren, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her six siblings: Judith Jessup, Josephine Markley, Rick Chaffee, Cindy McDowell, Deanne Garman, and Debra (Larry) Beers. What they shared throughout their lives will undoubtedly keep her spirit alive within each of them.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Robert W., Sr. and Helen E. (Hettinger) Chaffee, and her brothers, Robert Chaffee Jr., and Ronald Chaffee. Their memories will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved them.

An avid lover of nature, Susan found joy in gardening, flowers and plants. She also enjoyed fishing and bird watching. She especially loved her cherished quaker parrot, Joie. She enjoyed any activities that allowed her to connect with the serenity of the outdoors. Susan was also a wonderful cook and baker. She was known for her delicious baked beans and black walnut strudels.

While our shared journey with Susan was often challenging, her absence leaves and undeniable sense of loss. She will be missed by those that knew her and remembered by those that knew her fondly. We are all happy with the passing of her pain and the knowledge that she is now with the Lord.
