Two pedestrians died after being struck by vehicle

Two men in their 30s died after they were struck by a vehicle Thursday morning in White Pigeon Township.

St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called shortly after 5 a.m. to the area of Eagley Road and Lake Road in response to a personal-injury traffic crash.

Investigators said a 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by a 57-year-old man, was southbound on Eagley Road when an unknown vehicle heading north crossed the centerline. The northbound vehicle apparently crossed the centerline to avoid two parked pickups on the east side of Eagley Road.

Deputies said it appears the driver of the Trailblazer maneuvered his vehicle toward the west side of the roadway in an attempt to avoid, and/or allow the northbound vehicle to pass. During the maneuver, the two male pedestrians were struck on Eagley Road.

Life-saving measures were initiated at the scene. However, both pedestrians – ages 30 and 37 – succumbed to their injuries, deputies said.
