Olimpia Maftean, age 97, of Sturgis, passed away early Sunday morning, February 22, 2026, at her home.
She was born October 16, 1927 in Marginea, Suceava, Romania, the daughter of the late Stefan and Trandafiea (Precob) Maftean.
Olimpia was a devoted mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was a faithful member of St. Elias Eastern Orthodox Church in Battle Creek. Olimpia found great joy in gardening and had a special passion for knitting. With love in every stitch, she created blankets, scarves, and hats for all of her grandchildren and many friends, leaving behind cherished keepsakes that reflect her warmth and generosity.
She is survived by her daughter, Aurelia (James) Hirsch of Sturgis; her grandchildren, Rodica Powers, Adrian Pietrariu, Derek Alexander, Cristian Pietrariu, and Cristina Pietrariu; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Florin Gavril Olarean; and one sister and one brother.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 6:45 P.M. Friday, February 27, 2026, at Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa Street, Sturgis, where the Panikhida memorial service will begin at 7:00 P.M. Friday.
The funeral service will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 28, 2026, at St. Elias Eastern Orthodox Church, 5066 B Drive South, Battle Creek, with the Very Rev. Archpriest Lawrence Bacik officiating.
A graveside committal service will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
