National Weather Service issue preliminary tornado ratings

The National Weather Service has issued a preliminary rating to three of four tornadoes that touched down Friday in Cass, St. Joseph and Branch counties.

The Cass County tornado, which severely impacted Edwardsburg and portions of Cassopolis, is still being reviewed. The St. Joseph County tornado has been assigned an EF2 rating, meaning wind speeds were between 111 and 135 miles per hour. The strongest of last week’s tornadoes was in Branch County and near Union City. That tornado was labeled EF3, which measures gusts at between 136 and 165 miles per hour.

By the time the storm system reached southeastern Calhoun County, a confirmed tornado there was rated EF0, a category in which wind speeds are between 65 and 85 miles per hour.
