Phone scam reported in Cass County

Cass County Sheriff’s Office wants to make the public aware of a phone scam recently reported.

Sheriff Clint Roach said a resident received a phone call that included “No Caller ID” on the phone’s screen. The caller claimed to be from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and said the would-be-victim has two outstanding warrants for missing jury duty.

The resident said the caller sounded convincing, providing what was presumably a fake name and supposed case numbers.

The caller then demanded $2,000 to pause the warrant. The resident ended the call at that point and contacted law-enforcement officials.

Roach said the sheriff’s department will never conduct business of this nature over the telephone.
