Man swept off South Haven pier

An out-of-state resident was swept off South Haven’s south pier last week.

Van Buren County officials said the 57-year-old man was swept into Lake Michigan shortly before 6 p.m. Friday after a series of large waves crashed over the pier. The incident occurred toward the end of the pier, by the lighthouse, authorities said.

The pier was declared closed at the time of the incident.

The man was saved by a person who was with him after the second person threw a life ring to the man and pulled him to safety.

He was out of the water when authorities arrived. The victim was treated at Bronson South Haven Hospital.

South Haven officials said there is a $1,000 fine imposed when anyone enters the pier when it is declared closed. In this case, the pier was closed earlier in the day due to high wind and wave conditions.
