Kay Marie Holmes, age 81, of Leonidas, passed away at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo on March 18, 2026 after a long illness. She was born in Durand, MI on January 30, 1945. Kay attended Hartland High School and was part of the 1963 graduating class. Following graduation, she married the love of her life, Doug Holmes, on July 19, 1963 in Flint.
Kay was an artist at heart; crafting, painting, wood carving, upholstery… the list goes on and on. If something took imagination, working with your hands, or creating something out of nothing, Kay was in her element. In addition to her new creations, she had an infatuation with antiques. If it was old and had some charm to it, it was leaving the shop in Shipshewana, going home with her. Traveling was a cornerstone, making memories across the entire United States (even Alaska) in a camper. Making day trips up and down the St. Joseph River while in a canoe or tube was something she always looked forward to. Kay was often at the Colon Food Bank, donating and helping others any way she could. Occasionally, Kay would sit still (just for a moment) to enjoy Gunsmoke or Little House on the Prairie. Kay was a busy woman, a creative artist, and an excited traveler; but nothing compared to some intense card games with her family and friends, especially if it was 500 rummy or euchre.
Kay is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Doug Holmes; two daughters; Mary (Bill) Wojdyla and Karen (Ron) Bochenek; four grandchildren; Sasha (Josh) Scheib, Nathaniel (Taylor) Green, Danielle Parmelee, Sheldon (Allen) Mitchell; three great-grandchildren; Clara, Jaxon, and Holdon; two siblings; Denis and Barbara.
In keeping with Kay’s wishes, cremation is being conducted. A private celebration of life will take place at a later date. It is suggested that donations made in her name be directed to Southwest Michigan Food Bank.
