Sheriff’s department names award recipients

St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department held its annual awards ceremony last week during the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Sheriff Chad Spence said the ceremony recognized deputies, staff and a member of the community for their actions and service in 2025.

Samaritan Award recipient was Steve Calloway, recognized for stepping in to help a man who fell through the ice on Prairie Lake.

Professionalism Award recipient was Danielle Brandenburg, acknowledged for her work and dedication behind the scenes, Spence said, adding that Brandenburg stepped into a position during a transition and brought organization, structure and consistency to daily operations.

Life Saving Award was issued to Deputy Travis Miller for responding to a cardiac arrest, and providing CPR and AED use, helping restore a pulse before paramedics arrived.

In addition, deputies Ross Taflinger and Jordan Studabaker were recognized for their quick response in the jail, where they intervened and prevented an inmate from taking their own life.

Meritorious Service Award was presented to Jeff Bingaman for locating and detaining a hit-and-run suspect while off duty. Also, Deputy Nathan Hewitt for an investigation that uncovered multiple suspects and connected several cases across the area.

In addition, Miller, Sergeant Paulino Hernandez and Deputy Rachael Britton were recognized for their teamwork during a lengthy pursuit that ended in the safe apprehension of a wanted subject.
