State tax extension for tornado victims

Individuals and businesses impacted by the March 6 tornados are eligible for state tax extension relief, the Michigan State Treasurer announced.

Taxpayers in Branch, Cass and St. Joseph counties can request time to file state tax returns and pay state tax bills; penalties and interest will be waived for those who qualify, according to a release from the State of Michigan.

The extension only applies for Michigan state tax filings. It does not apply for federal taxes.

Taxpayers must contact Treasury online, by mail or phone to request relief. Individual income tax extension relief can call at 517-636-4486. For business taxes, taxpayers should contact 517-636-6925.
