Thomas Shumaker, 82

Tom Shumaker, age 82, passed away on March 31, 2026 at Thurston Woods Village Nursing Home.

Tom was born in Russell, Kansas June 28, 1943. After high school he attended Kansas University and then moved to Washington, DC where he attended American University and received a Juris Doctorate Degree.

Tom Moved to Sturgis in 1969 to work for the Dresser Law Firm before opening his own law office in 1975. In 1989 he was elected Probate Judge for St. Joseph County and served 24 years.

During his judicial tenure, he worked on many committees in the county and state and received many recognitions and awards.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy. Also surviving are three sons: Travis Shumaker of Kirkland, Washington, Shawn Flock (Lori) of Hesperia, Michigan, and Christopher Flock (Monica) of St. Joseph, Michigan; 5 grandchildren: Cali Flock, Orrin Flock, Harlow Flock, Tegan Shumaker, and Beckett Shumaker.

There will be no visitation or services as cremation has taken place. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis have been entrusted with the arrangements.
