Constantine village officials announced that the goal of a new fire station took one step closer to reality last week.
Demolition started Wednesday on the former D&S Market building, at 175 N. Washington St. The property is the location of the future Constantine Fire Department.
Municipal officials said the one-time business has more recently turned into an eyesore, with peeling paint and boarded-up doors.
The new fire station still faces a number of hurdles, including planning, construction and financing, but demolition of the D&S facility marks a step in the right direction, village officials said.
The village plans to issue up to $2.5 million in bonds to complement a $1.5 million grant to help cover the cost of the new building.

Let’s understand this. Took more than 4 years to demolish it, yet you don’t have plans, construction, or financing? The basics?
The village’s owned the property since 2018. It was a dilapidated eyesore then. Took 8 years for them to tear it down? Saw on Facebook some official claimed it was because no one could figure out if it had asbestos or not. Took 8 years for the village insurerer or the State inspector to test it? You believe that line? Bet you believe that same guy claiming the pot shops pay for the new fire station. Think $163,000 covers for that? Too much inhaling!
