Family treatment court admits first participant

St. Joseph County Probate Court Judge Kevin Kane announced the opening of Family Treatment Court.

Kane said its purpose is to serve as a resource for parents struggling with substance abuse. Its first participant was admitted last month.

The program was established thanks to a collaboration between Juvenile Court staff members, St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Pivotal and other partners.

The voluntary program is available to parents who are in court for abuse and/or neglect charges due to substance abuse.

Kane said participants work through a series of achievements that result in more contact time with their children. The goal is reunification, Kane added.

Funding is available for Family Treatment Court to take up to 10 clients in its first year.
