Victor Fitz’s retirement as Cass County prosecutor proved to be a short-lived experience.
Branch County Circuit Court officials on Monday appointed Fitz as their interim prosecuting attorney following Zachary Stempien’s ascension to the Circuit Court bench.
While the position will be decided by voters in the August primary and November general elections, the court appointed Fitz to ensure operational stability.
County officials said Fitz has more than 40 years of experience, including 23 years as an elected prosecutor. He retired from the Cass County position Tuesday.
Fitz will lead the office during this transition period.
Michigan law prevents Fitz from running for the seat in the upcoming primary.
