Energy company ITC will conduct aerial inspections of high‑voltage transmission lines and equipment across much of Michigan starting next week through the end of June.
Helicopter patrols intend to assess the condition of overhead transmission structures operated by ITC.
According to a company media release, the flights are part of required vegetation management and reliability inspections under standards set by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation. Crews will look for damaged or worn equipment and potential vegetation hazards that could affect the electric system.
Locally, crews will be conducting surveys June 12-17 in Branch, St. Joseph and Kalamazoo counties.
Most inspection flights are conducted at low altitudes to allow crews to visually examine transmission equipment for lightning damage, wear and other potential issues. ITC said this is standard procedure and does not indicate an emergency.
