Out and About – Week of January 18th

“Cowboy Kickin’ for a Cure”. This is the theme for this year’s Relay for Life and the kick-off party is this evening at the Three Rivers High School cafeteria. The fun starts at six for all those interested in being a part of this very worthwhile event. The actual relay runs from noon to noon, June 25-26, at Armstrong Field in Three Rivers. This evening there will be plenty of information to share and, of course, plenty of “grub” to consume. Oh yes, plenty of liquid refreshment to wash down the “grub” will also be available. The word is out. Grab your favorite cowgal or cowpoke, slip on those boots, grab that ten-gallon hat, and head over to the high school cafeteria. It’s the perfect place to get Out and About this evening.

Is your address properly displayed on your house? Do people have difficulty finding your residence because your house number is hard to read or missing? Here’s the solution to both of these issues. The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department’s Explorer Post #478 is selling 911 mailbox signs. I’m sure you’ve seen them around. The signs are six inches by seventeen and one-half inches with 3-inch reflective numbers on both sides, complete with a green background. You have a choice in selecting vertical or horizontal numbers. These metal signs cost $15.50, and the Explorer Scout Post uses all proceeds for uniforms and educational training. If this is something that interests you, you may order a sign by calling or visiting the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department in Centreville. Their phone number is (269)467-9045.

There’s nothing like a bowl of hot soup to take away the chill on these cold winter days. It’s that time of the year for the annual Three Rivers Empty Bowls Soup Supper. In fact, the 15th Annual Empty Bowls Soup Supper is just around the corner. On Thursday, February 4, from 5 to 7 P.M., in the Three Rivers High School Cafeteria, you may treat yourself and the family to some hot soup, bread, beverage, and a dessert of your choice. The cost of the soup supper is your donation. Before or after supper, you can check out the handmade soup bowls, all created and donated by first, third, and fifth graders in Three Rivers. The bowls will be on display and available for purchase.

I’d like to wrap up this week’s column with a bit of Michigan trivia. A special thanks to my friend, Vic, the Trivia Editor of the Commission on Aging Newsletter. Sit back, read, and learn.

THE MACKINAC BRIDGE IS ONE OF THE LONGEST SUSPENSION BRIDGES IN

THE WORLD. CONNECTING THE UPPER AND LOWER PENINSULAS OF THE

STATE, IT SPANS FIVE MILES OVER THE STRAITS OF MACKINAC WHERE

LAKES MICHIGAN AND HURON MEET. THE MIGHTY MAC TOOK THREE

YEARS TO COMPLETE AND WAS OPENED TO TRAFFIC IN 1957.

Thanks, Vic. If I didn’t have such a fear of suspension bridges, it would be a nice venture to make.

See you Out and About!
