Rev. William Bowen, 84

Rev. William Aiken Bowen, 84, of Monroe, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at his home. He had been in poor health since 2000 and seriously ill for five months.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Rupp Funeral Home, Inc. A memorial service will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Monroe. Rev. Nancy Carle pastor of the church will officiate and Rev. James Jacobs will assist. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Sturgis.

Born June 7, 1925, in Royal Oak; he was the son of William and Ruth (Aiken) Bowen. He married Roberta K. Brumbaugh on Aug. 31, 1970, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.

Rev. Bowen was a graduate of Royal Oak High School, Alma College and McCormick Theological Seminary. He served in the United States Navy from July 1, 1943 to Nov. 15, 1945. A former member of Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Alma College Representative to the Maumee Valley Presbytery, Council of Churches, Maumee Valley Presbytery and a volunteer with Mercy Memorial Hospice.

He served as pastor at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Milwaukee, First Presbyterian Church, Loveland, Ohio, Walnut Hills First Presbyterian Church, Cincinnati, (where he also taught New Testament Literature at University of Cincinnati), First Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, Ohio, First Presbyterian Church, Sturgis, St. Thomas Community Presbyterian Church, Utica, Mich., First Presbyterian Church, Omro, Wisc., and First Presbyterian Church Monroe from which he retired in 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Roberta; children, Kathleen Bowen of Riverside, Calif., David Bowen of Phoenix, Amy (Stephen) Pace, of Monroe, Phillip (Tammy) Bowen of Toledo, Emily (Bryan) Sears of Baltimore; grandchildren, Andrew Bowen, Jarod Bowen, Rachel Pace, Rebecca Pace and William Sears.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard; brother, Ronald; and sister, Betty.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monroe County Humane Society, Mercy Memorial Hospice or First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.
