Wava Elaine Borgert, age 85, a lifelong resident of Sturgis, and Burr Oak, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village.
She was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Sturgis, a daughter to the late William and Mable (Snook) Steinke.
Wava was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1942 and on March 28, 1946, in Sturgis, she married Frank W. Borgert Jr. He passed away Dec. 19, 1993.
Her life’s work and passion was owning and operating Steinke Resort in Burr Oak, where she especially enjoyed working the candy store so she could interact with people, young and old, and express her favorite saying “Bless your Heart.”
Surviving are two sons, John (Kathy) Borgert and James (Karen) Borgert, both of Burr Oak; one daughter, Judy Winkler and Jim Brown of Sturgis; four grandchildren, Charles Borgert, Michael (Jenni) Borgert, Jamie Borgert, and Kyle Borgert; brother-in-law, Dan (LaVonne) Borgert; two sister-in-laws, Lucille (Robert) Robinson and Betty Steinke.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Wilbur Steinke.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 7- 9 p.m. today at the Hackman Family Funeral Home – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis.
A time of gathering for family and friends will also be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1320 S. Lakeview, Sturgis, where memorial services celebrating the life of Wava Borgert will be held immediately following the gathering at 4 p.m., with The Rev. Michael Wicks, officiating.
Private burial will take place in South Colon Cemetery, Colon. The family suggest memorial donations be directed to Thurston Woods Village, Heartland Hospice, or the First Presbyterian Church, envelopes are available at the funeral home.
