Robert S. Fennell, age 81, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, 2010, at his home following a hard fought battle with cancer.
He was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Sturgis, Mich., a son to the late Frank and Alma (Adams) Fennell.
Bob was a lifelong resident of Sturgis. On May 28, 1952, he married Phyllis Coombs in Sturgis.
He was a dedicated employee of G.F. Business Forms in Sturgis for 25 years until the business closed. He retired from Rood Industries also in Sturgis.
He enjoyed playing Euchre, yard work and flower and vegetable gardening and was one to never pass up a bowl of ice cream. In 1990 he received the Sturgis Exchange Club Keep Sturgis Beautiful Award. Bob had an extensive collection of steins and beer memorabilia and signs. He had a true appreciation for animals and enjoyed watching birds and always had pets in his home.
Mr. Fennell’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Sturgis for the outstanding care that Bob received and the support that they also received.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 57, Phyllis; one daughter, Judy (Charles) Benton of Colon; one grandson, Brian Robert Benton of Colon; three step-grandchildren, his Poodle Tinkerbell; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Peggy Gordon; and one brother, Fredrick Fennell.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Robert Fennell will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Robert Keim will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
