Harriett Bond, 90

Harriett Virginia Bond ran her final race and joined loved ones in heaven on March 7, 2010.

She was born July 27, 1919, a daughter of the late Wilber and Marie (Hillsammer) Scott.

Orphaned at the age of 5, Harriett grew up in the Children’s Home in Marion, Ind.

On June 20, 1941, she married the love of her life, Vern Bond in Hammond, Ind., and enjoyed 63 years of marriage before he passed away July 26, 2004.

She was an accountant and managed the office of FSC Paper Company in Alsip, Ill., for 21 years before retiring at age 74.

Harriett loved the Lord, the church, her family, doted on her grandchildren, and was delighted with her three great-grandsons. She was a joyful Christian known for her kind and generous spirit and was always ready to help anyone in need. Harriett’s family and guests will fondly remember how she entertained, with lavish platters of roast, ham, chicken, ribs, and shrimp — all at one dinner.

The children of the church loved the “Sucker Lady,” as Harriett distributed Tootsie Roll Pops at the end of every service. She often said, “There is always someone you can help.”

Surviving are one son, the Rev. Gary (Beth) Bond of Sturgis; one daughter, Terri (Bob) Vales of Channahan, Ill.; five grandchildren, Julie (Christopher) Martin of Washington, D.C., Joy Bond of Boca Raton, Fla., Bryan Edwards of Joliet, Ill., Melissa (Steve) Brandis of New Lenox, Ill., and Matthew Vales of Joliet; and three great-grandsons, Ian, Xander, and Rohan Brandis.
