Out and About – Week of March 15th

Congratulations to the Three Rivers High School basketball teams, both boys and girls. You gave it all you could to make it to the finals and we couldn’t be prouder of your dedication and desire to be state champions. You are all champions in our eyes, and you should be proud of playing with true Wildcat spirit and never letting up until the final buzzer.

I’d like to mention one final time the benefit Swiss Steak dinner for Dick and Betty Meyer next Sunday, March 21. The venue is the West Mendon United Methodist Church, 22994 Portage Lake Road, Mendon. The Mendon and West Mendon United Methodist Men’s Group is hosting, and the dinner will be served from noon until 2 P.M. The cost for this worthwhile cause is adults $8, children under 12 $5, family of four or more $25, and if you’re a child under 4, your meal is FREE. As I mentioned last week, take-outs will be available. If you still have questions, please phone 496-7364.

To help celebrate the arrival of spring, Gray’s Community Band, under the direction of Andrew Hagenbuch, will present “Spring in Michigan” next Sunday, March 21, at 3 P.M., at the First Church of God, 17398 M-86, Three Rivers. In other words, it’s just east of the American Legion on M-86, and it’s on the left side of the road. Several of the musical selections will include “Typewriter” by Leroy Anderson, “Pride of the Wolverines” by Sousa, and “Reverie” by Debussy. If you’ve never attended a performance by Gray’s Community Band, you’ll want to definitely attend this one. The music and musicians are remarkable, admission is free, refreshments are available after the concert, and most importantly, it’s a wonderful way to show your support for local talent. As I just mentioned, the concert is FREE, but donations are always graciously accepted. If you have some musical talent and have considered being a part of a band who enjoys having fun, give Andrew a call at 244-1014.

It’s still a month away, but it is worth putting down on your kitchen calendar and personal planner. The Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) of St. Joseph County is planning their 8th annual all-you-can-eat Mostaccioli Dinner Auction for Saturday, April 17, starting at 5:30 P.M. Tickets for adults are $8, and children 12 and under are $4. The auction itself will start at 6:30. The place to go to be a part of this, another worthwhile cause, is the Three Rivers High School cafeteria.

The auction will have items from local businesses, in support of ARF’s animal causes. New to the auction this year will be the addition of nationally known corporations, celebrity/sports figures, musical artists, and authors. Also available this year will be tickets to Walt Disney World in Orlando; a golf package from the Grand Hotel’s golf course, located on Mackinac Island; and tickets to the Henry Ford Museum in the Detroit area. Professional auctioneer services will be provided by Glassman and Smittendorf Auctioneers from Fulton, Michigan. If you forget to clip this article and post it on your refrigerator or bulletin board, I’ll mention it again as time draws closer.

For more information about ARF and what it does for the community, or if you’d like to add your name to their e-mail list, please visit their website at www.ARFund.org.

Spring will soon be here, so it’s time to start planning your garden. You might want to seriously consider planting some cucumbers. Cucumbers have many uses other than consumption. Those of you who wear leather shoes instead of walking shoes, rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe. Its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great, but also repels water. If you happen to run out of lubricating oil and need to fix a squeaky hinge, take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problem hinge. The squeak will be gone. Finally, if you’d really like to eat one, you’ll be glad to know that just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Zinc. That must be a very large cucumber. Thanks, Vic.

See you Out and About!
