Eddie Brookens, 90

Edwin “Eddie” Mayor Brookens, 90, of Three Rivers, passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at his home. He was born on Nov. 13, 1919 in Chicago, Ill. the son of Edwin Brookens Sr. and Earline (Walker) Brookens.

Mr. Brookens has been a long time resident of Three Rivers, moving from Chicago where he worked for 30 years as a meat-cutter. Upon moving to Three Rivers, he became a custodian for the Three Rivers Schools and retired after 20 years. Most recently, Eddie has been a greeter for the Three Rivers Meijer store for the last 12 years, where many people enjoyed his warm and welcoming smile and conversation.

Mr. Brookens was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jean Brookens, who passed in 2002, and one son, Edwin Brookens Jr.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his very special family, one son, Patrick Brookens of Grand Rapids; two daughters, Sylvia McGowan and Vesta Thompson, both of Three Rivers; one sister, Mary Jones, of Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren, John, Bob, Edie, Ellie, Jeanie, Patrick, Jamil, Jeffrey and Dustin; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15 at the Hohner Funeral Home, with Fr. Mark Vyverman officiating.

Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Three Rivers.

Memorials may be donated to the American Heart Association. Envelopes available at the Hohner Funeral Home.
