Maxine L. Burleigh, 74, of Marcellus, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2010, in Riverview Manor, Three Rivers, following a long illness.
Maxine was born March 15, 1936 in Port Huron, the daughter of John F. and E. Rowenna (Goff) Balog. On June 25, 1955 in Marcellus she married Alfred E. Burleigh Jr. who preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 2001.
She had lived most of her life in Marcellus and graduated from Marcellus High School in 1955. From 1967 to 1985, she and her husband owned and operated Burleigh’s South Side Grocery. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She taught religious education for 45 years at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Cathy (Dennis) Small of Marcellus; three sons, James (Lucy) Burleigh of Reading, Pa., Michael Burleigh of Marcellus and Gregory (Nina) Burleigh of Marcellus; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Moore of Three Rivers and Sister Rosemary Balog of Nazareth; two brothers, John (Lorinda) Balog of Glascow, Kan. and Gerald Balog of Peru, Ind.; one brother-in-law, Robert Swihart of Mendon; several nieces and nephews.
Two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, July 23 in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Father Mathew Illikattil celebrant. Burial will follow in Marcellus Cemetery.
The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Mater Funeral Home, Marcellus. A rosary service was held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.
