Pauline Merriman, 96

Pauline V. (King) Merriman, 96, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday morning, Aug. 25, 2010, at Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers.

She was born Oct. 24, 1913, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Harvey and Louise (Frohriep) Bogues.

Pauline graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1931 and was a lifelong Sturgis resident until moving to Kissimmee, Fla., in October 1984. She returned to Sturgis in August 2004.

On Feb. 28, 1936, she married Charles S. King in LaGrange, Ind. He died Oct. 28, 1967.

On Oct. 11, 1983, she married Losen R. Merriman in the Presbyterian Church in Kissimmee. He died Dec. 11, 1990.

Pauline continued her education at the International College in Fort Wayne, Ind., and graduated Nov, 17, 1933. Following her graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Kirsch Company in Sturgis until 1939. In 1962, she accepted a position in the superintendent’s office at Sturgis Public Schools, a position she held until her retirement in 1978.

Pauline was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis, where she had taught a Sunday school class for preschool children for 11 years. She also was a member and past president of the Child Study Club and a member of AARP and the Michigan Public School Employees’ Retirement System.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Roberts of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, John (Sherry) King of Rochester Hills; three grandchildren, Shelley (Kelly Davidsmeyer) Meese, Amanda (Edward) Phelka and Matthew (Windi) King; and four great grandchildren.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Private placement of the ashes will take place at a later date at the Chapel of Light columbarium in Osceola Memorial Gardens, Kissimmee, Fla.

Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Hackman Chapel, in Sturgis, is entrusted with the arrangements.
