Lloyd Gordon Foncannon, 95, of Marcellus, passed away Friday evening, Sept. 3, 2010 in Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, following an illness.
He was born Dec. 26, 1914 in Marcellus, the son of C. Frank and Gladys (Shoenight) Foncannon. On Sept. 30, 1938 in Grand Haven he married Ruth E. Gillard who preceded him in death Feb. 14, 2004.
He graduated from Marcellus High School in 1932 and from Western Teachers College in Kalamazoo and received his Masters Degree from Wayne State University. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy as a communications officer on the U.S.S. Cleveland in the South Pacific. He taught History, Geography and Social Studies in Detroit, Lawton and Dowagiac. As a horticulturist he raised Christmas trees and Carpathian walnuts. He enjoyed photography, sculpturing and painting.
Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Nancy Foncannon of Marcellus and one granddaughter, Michelle Foncannon of Columbia, Md. and several cousins. One son, Robert A. Foncannon preceded him in death Sept. 7, 2008 and one brother, Howard F. Foncannon also preceded him in death.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside military rites will be conducted at a later date. Memorials in memory of Gordon Foncannon may be directed to the Marcellus Fire and Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 367, Marcellus, MI 49067. Arrangements were handled by the Mater Funeral Home, Marcellus.
