Allen Hines, 79

Allen Eugene Hines, age 79 of rural Three Rivers, died peacefully Friday Oct. 29, 2010 surrounded by family at his Portage Lake home. He was born in Connersville, IN on Oct. 11, 1931 the son of Frank and Lillian (Coby) Hines. After parochial school, Al joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea, Japan, and Hawaii. He was married to Carol Butler on June 26, 1959 in Mendon. They have resided in the Mendon area since their marriage, and have attended the Crossroads Missionary Church.

Al had worked at Continental Can Co. in Three Rivers and was a truck driver for ARCO in Schoolcraft for several years. He had also worked briefly for Durham Insulation of Vicksburg, and the Branch County Intermediate School District. Al enjoyed being outdoors, watching his grandchildren’s sporting events, and especially piloting his plane and attending air shows.

Al is survived by his wife, Carol; two children Patty (Russ) Ahrens, and Dean Hines all of Three Rivers; five grandchildren, Logan, Carson, and Olivia Ahrens, and Aaron and Erica Hines; two sisters, Evelyn (Larry) Briggs of Mendon and Marilla (Jerry) Houser of Vicksburg; two brothers, Jerry (Barbara) Hines of Three Rivers, and Dave Hines of Centreville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by three brothers, Dennis, Herbert, and Edward Hines.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday Nov. 3, 2010 at the Crossroads Missionary Church (M-60 at Silver Street) with Pastor Bryan Balasa officiating. Military interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Memorials will be directed to the West Michigan Cancer Center. An online registry is available at www.eickhofffuneralhome.com
