Milan Edward “Cobby” Cobbs, age 82, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Dec. 18, 2010, at his home.
He was born April 15, 1928, in Wolcottville, Ind., a son of the late Carl R. and Bessie (M. (Schanouer) Cobbs.
Cobby had resided in Sturgis since 1949 coming from Wolcottville, Ind., and he had also lived in Arizona for a short time.
On Feb. 21, 1948, he married Barbara Slagg in Sturgis. She preceded him in death.
He retired in 1983 from the Kirsch Company in Sturgis following 36 years of dedicated employment. Before joining the Kirsch Company he had worked at McCray Refrigeration in Kendallville, Ind.
Cobby was a talented woodworker. He enjoyed performing his own repairs from carpentry work to plumbing. He also enjoyed traveling and camping and loved mowing his lawn.
He is survived by two daughters, Sue Fry and Sally Burnham, both of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Casey (Jeremy) Morton of Mishawaka, Ind., Michele S. Fry of Fayetteville, NC, Hilary (The Rev. Timothy) Singleton of Colorado Springs, Colo., Stephen Edward Burnham of Three Rivers and Denise Ann Yuzick of Phoenix, Ariz.; six great-grandchildren, Justin David Singleton, Nicholas Arthur Singleton and Grace Naomi Singleton all of Colorado Springs, Colo., Hayley Elizabeth Fry of Mishawaka, Ind., Kaitlyn Joann Mannhalter of Harrisburg, SC and Nikole Black of White Pigeon; one sister, Harriett (Paul) Atwater of Howe, Ind.;, special friend, Jackie Bower of Burr Oak; and several nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two granddaughters, Cheryl K. Fry and Cristy L. Fry; and two brothers, Bud Cobb and Don Cobbs.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, (269) 651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Milan E. “Cobby” Cobbs will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Deb Johnson of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis will officiate. Private burial will follow the service at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak.
