Mildred A. Scritchfield, age 94, formerly of Colon and Mendon, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, after several months of failing health.
Mildred was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Hopewell, Pa., a daughter to the late Edward and Etta (Livingston) Heister.
She attended the Robert P. Smith Vocational School in Hopewell.
On June 9, 1934, she married Ross R. Scritchfield in Hopewell, Pa. He preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1987.
During Word War II she worked at United States Letterkenny Ordnance. In 1947 she and her husband moved to Mendon and took up farming. During 1953 and 1954 she worked at the Olney Clinic in Leonidas as a receptionist. She worked for G & W Foods & Michigan Steak Co. both in Mendon. In November of 1972 she and her husband moved to Colon. She then worked as an attendant at the Colon Laundromat.
Mildred was a member of the Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by one son, Leon F. Scritchfield of Mendon and one step-grandson Steven Siscoe of Colon and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and two sisters and a daughter-in-law.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mildred A. Scritchfield will be Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at 11 a.m. from the funeral home with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Beard Cemetery in Leonidas, Township.
If desired memorials may be made in memory of Mildred to either the Colon or Leonidas Fire Departments. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
