Richard “Dick” Quinn, age 89, of Kalamazoo and formerly of Mendon, died Sunday Jan. 9, 2011 at his home. He was born in Delaware County, Iowa on June 23, 1921 the son of Robert F. and Irene G. (Correll) Quinn. Dick attended schools in Iowa and attended the University of Dubuque. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 aboard the USS Maryland. He also served on the USS Virginia and USS New Mexico. Dick was past president of the Wolverine Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He was also a member of the Admiral Nimitz Association; the Schoolcraft American Legion Post #475; and the Marcellus V.F.W. Post #4054. He was a licensed pilot and a docent at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. Dick worked at the Haas Corporation in Mendon and later as an electrician in local commercial construction projects. He was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 131.
Dick was married to June Hughes on Jan. 20, 1945 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon. They resided in Mendon before moving to Kalamazoo in 1965. Together they traveled the world together on numerous cruises, and later toured the United States with a travel trailer. Dick was an accomplished photographer, documenting their numerous trips and family events.
Dick is survived by 2 sons, Steven Quinn of South Bend, and Michael Quinn (Yolanda) of Portage; a daughter Sue Quinn-Gardener (David) of Scotts; 2 grandsons, Scott Gardener and Andrew Gardener; 3 granddaughters, Maura Quinn, Erin Quinn, and Maeve Quinn; 1 great-granddaughter, Aurora Quinn; a sister, Patricia Galinet of Tucson, AZ; 3 brothers, Dave Quinn (Ruth) of Portage, John Quinn (Polly) of Dana Point, CA, and Terry Quinn (Mary) of Marcellus; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June in 2010; daughter Kathleen in 1964; and by 3 brothers, James, Thomas, and Roger Quinn.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon, followed by a Rosary Service at 8 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday Jan. 14, 2011 at Saint Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. Monsignor John Porter officiating. Burial will be in Saint Edward Cemetery. Memorials will be directed to Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes. An online register is available at www.eickhofffuneralhome.com
