Mary Reed, 91

Mary Kathryn Stewart Reed, of Klinger Lake, died in her sleep Jan. 12, 2011. Her death was attributed to advanced age at 91. She resided with her daughter, Sally Porter, in San Gabriel, Calif.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., her parents only daughter, she graduated from then Robert Morris College, traveled to New York City where she met and married her husbnad, Harvey Bothwell Reed. They came to Klinger Lake in 1948 and eventuallly Sturgis, before moving their family to California. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, in 1963.

Mary was an artist, an avid reader and incredible cook. She was seen as the glue that held the family together and could often be seen walking the lake by herself or with her Girl Scout troop. She was a member of of the Women of the Moose in Sturgis and they continued her membership for six years after she moved to California. Mary was known for working tirelessly to insure all were taken care of without a second thought or need for acknowledgement. She served many years nursing at Sturgis Hospital where three of her five children were born. Her energy and zest for life were contagious and those who knew her will miss her sparkling smile.

Mary leaves 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchidren and one great-great-grandchild.

Her children, sons Stuart of Cypress, Calif., and George of Corinth, Miss.; and daughters, Mary and Sally of San Gabriel, Calif, and Peggy of Grants Pass, Ore., held a funeral Mass on Jan. 18 at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Cypress, Calif. Burial followed at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, Calif.
