Letha I. Schreiber, 91, of Three Rivers, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011 at her home, after a lengthy illness, with her daughter, Karen, by her side. Letha was born May 26, 1919 in Mt. Sterling, Ill., the youngest of four children to Ralph and Maude (Burkey) Hickman.
She was married to Eugene (Gene) Schreiber of Quincy, Ill. on Nov. 17, 1940, in Kansas City, Mo. They lived for a short time in Denver, Colo., before returning to Quincy at the beginning of WWII where their son Kirk was born in November 1943. Letha and her family came to Three Rivers in December of 1946 where Karen was born in July 1949. Letha completed four years of college education in 18 months at Gem City College in Quincy, where she also taught night classes after graduation. She worked as a secretary for many years and retired as the executive secretary to the president and vice president of Armstrong Machine Works when her husband became ill.
Letha was a lifetime member and former Start Point of the Three Rivers Chapter of the OES. She was active in the church, hospital auxiliary and the Three Rivers Elks, Shrine, Masons and Lions Club where her husband was an officer and member. She was also a lifetime member and former officer of the GFWC-Three Rivers Woman’s Club, an active member and former officer of the St. Joe County Chapter for the Michigan Retired School Personnel and was instrumental in the creation of the Carnegie Center for the Arts in Three Rivers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lawrence, Everette and Lyle; her son, Kirk; her husband, Gene. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Schreiber-Perlberg (Jim Perlberg) of Three Rivers and Woodhaven. Letha was most happy working in her yard and garden with her daughter and Schnauzer by her side over the years.
