Raymond Newton Johnson, 83, of Three Rivers, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011 following a long illness. He was born in Mendon on March 1, 1928 the son of Newton O. and Nora (Croghan) Johnson and had been a lifetime resident of this area. He was married to Chloa E. Goodsell on Aug. 11, 1950 in South Bend, Ind. Ray had worked at Essex Wire, Bowers Auto Service and Lash Roofing. He was a former stock car driver at Mottville Speedway, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing the guitar.
Raymond is survived by six children and their spouses, William (Mary) Johnson of Elkhart, Ind., David (Elizabeth) Johnson of Three Rivers, April (Jim) Huntington of Fisk, Mo., Judy (Tim) Marciniak, Nancy (Victor) Johnson, and Gary Johnson all of Three Rivers; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Helen McDowell of Lamar, Ark.; companion, Mary Ann Johnson of Three Rivers; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Chloa; son, Eddie; granddaughter, Gabrielle; and three brothers, William Bowers, Willis Johnson and Floyd Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the funeral home with Pastor Sam Maddox of the Light & Life Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery.
