Out and About – Week of February 27th

Speaking for myself only, the nice thing about having a winter like we’ve experienced so far is that the lack of snow has been appreciated. The unfortunate thing is that, because of no snow, the road sides along our major highways show evidence of too many inconsiderate drivers, who think that this is their own private dumpsite. Unfortunately, there just aren’t enough law enforcement officers available to enforce the littering laws.

Auditions for the upcoming production of Once Upon A Mattress will be held Monday and Tuesday, March 5 and 6, at 7 P.M., at the Three Rivers Community Players Theatre on Millard Road, directly behind Dairy Queen, in Three Rivers. Production dates will be the weekends of April 27-29 and May 4-6. For more information, visit www.trcommunityplayers.org.

The County Closet, 901 South Main Street, Three Rivers, is under new management and is accepting donations of clean and folded clothing and small household goods. Cash donations are also being graciously accepted to help with operating costs. The County Closet is open Monday through Saturday from 9 A.M. until 2 P.M.

Absolute Homecare and Medical Staffing will sponsor another Senior Coffee Hour tomorrow morning, February 29, from 9 until 10 at L.A.’s Coffee Cafe, 145 West Michigan Avenue, Three Rivers. There will be giveaways, health care information, door prizes, and plenty of FREE coffee.

When you hear “Relay for Life”, you realize that spring can’t be too far off. I think we’ve experienced a little spring already, but I wouldn’t put away the snow shovel just yet. Anyway, the Relay for Life committee will hold their kickoff event to launch their fundraising effort for the year Thursday, March 1, at 6 P.M. The kickoff event will be held at Kadant-Johnson’s Research and Development Center on North Wood Street, Three Rivers. If you think you might want to be a part of this worthwhile happening, and would like more information, phone Danielle at (269)506-9365.

American Legion Post #170, 59990 South Main Street, Three Rivers, will host an all-you-can-eat fish fry this Saturday, March 3, beginning at 5 P.M. The fish fry benefit is for Joe Frederick, whose mother passed away recently; the proceeds will help defray the cost of the funeral. Dinner will be available from 5 until 8 P.M. The cost is an $8 donation. The menu includes fish or chicken strips, french fries, baked beans, cole slaw, and rolls. Foolish Heart Band will provide entertainment from 8 until 11 P.M. Raffles will be available, and the public is invited.

Are you looking for a new friend? How about a friend who might enjoy getting Out and About with you? There are many pets waiting for forever homes right here in St. Joe County. Many pets are turned in to shelters for a variety of reasons, many of which have absolutely nothing to do with them or their behavior. Perhaps there’s a divorce, maybe the pet’s owner passes away, financial difficulties arise, or a family must relocate due to a career change. If you decide that your family could use a four-legged member, check out a local shelter before spending a lot of money at a pet store. There are too many animals in need of a good home, and the only thing they can offer you is unconditional love. Here are several resources to consider:

Animal Control in Centreville – see www.ARFund.org.

Another website: www.Petfinder.com.

Finally, www.Upcycledpets.com.

I think Roger Caras might have said it best when he stated, “Some of our greatest historical and artistic treasures we place with curators in museums; others we take for walks.”

See you Out and About!
